Andreescu leads in Thailand, Fruhvirtova is seed 8

Invited to compete in Hua Hin’s WTA 250, Bianca Andreescu will be the main seed of the tournament on hard courts in Thailand. The 22-year-old Canadian and 2019 US Open champion is currently ranked 43rd.

Andreescu debuts against Britain’s Harriet Dart and if she wins she could face Anna Schmiedlova or Asatasia Zakharova. In the same quadrant is the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, seed 5 of the event, who faces the Taiwanese En-Shuo Liang.

The Russian Anna Kalinskaya is seeded 4 in the tournament and faces a compatriot from quali Ekatarina Makarova. She may face Belgium’s Ysaline Bonaventure or Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko in the round of 16. Her quadrant still has the German Tatjana Maria, who debuts against the 17-year-old Filipina Alexandra Eala, who passed through the qualifier. The Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska is also in this sector of the bracket.

Also noteworthy is the 17-year-old Czech Linda Fruhvirtova. After reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open, the current 82nd in the ranking is seed 8 and debuts against the North American Bethanie Mattek-Sands. If she wins, she could face Slovenian Tamara Zidansek. The Chinese left-hander Xiyu Wang is the third favorite and is in the quadrant.

The Kazakh Yulia Putintseva is the second seed and faces the British Heather Watson. She could face Romanian Elena Ruse or South Korean Na-Lae Han in the round of 16, while young Chinese Xinyu Wang would be a possible rival in the quarterfinals.

The other tennis players who passed the quali are the Swiss Joanne Zuger, the Australian Astra Sharma and the Russian Valeria Savinykh.
