Rugby has its origins in Great Britain, in the city that gives its name to the sport – Rugby, 137 kilometers northwest of London . From the 1840s onwards, it began to be regulated and its practice organized in clubs.

It was part of the Olympic program at Paris 1900 , London 1908 , Antwerp 1920 and Paris 1924 . It returned almost a century later, at Rio 2016 , with the variant of seven athletes in each team , known as “rugby sevens” , a format created in Scotland at the end of the 19th century.

Since their return to the Games, the countries of Oceania have dominated the sport. In the women’s category, Australia and New Zealand won gold in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo , respectively. Among men, Fiji is the current two-time Olympic champion.
