Simu Liu Addresses Controversy Over His ‘Moon Knight’ Criticism

Simu Liu, the star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsdrew attention in early April to the criticize a scene in the second episode of moon knight. This happened when Ethan Hawke’s Arthur Harrow revealed to Steven Grant that he and his followers had to learn a second language, and utters a few words in Mandarin to one of his female disciples.

Simu Liu apparently did not approve of the pronunciation and took to Twitter to record his comment: “Okay, Arthur Harrow needs to fire his Mandarin teacher.“. His comment quickly went viral, and now the actor has said in an interview with QA that the reactions to your post were disproportionate.

“I think maybe there’s a misconception that Marvel is this kind of monolithic, all-powerful single organism with infinite resources. I think it’s easy to blame Marvel as a whole. If you really go back, there was a translator who probably shouldn’t have been a translator. There were probably some people in the decision-making process who should have raised a flag but didn’t.”

“I fully appreciate the fact that Mandarin is not an easy language. I didn’t want to make a big political thing out of it. I just wanted to make fun of it because the sound that came out of that man’s mouth didn’t look like Mandarin at all.”

Even so, as he himself pointed out, it is a small flaw and not a big problem. As Mandarin is the second most spoken language in the world, maybe Marvel Studios will pay more attention to upcoming productions, even if it’s just for a single line of dialogue.
