What made Sharon Cuneta cry on the set of Madrasta?

Madrasta is one of Sharon Cuneta’s most successful movies from the ’90s.

The 1996 family drama film tells the story of Mariel (Sharon), a woman who chose to marry a separated man (Christopher de Leon) who has three children. Mariel strives to win the love and affection of her stepchildren while defining her role in the already-built but, deep inside, a broken family.

Sharon was a Grand Slam Best Actress winner for her portrayal in the movie, receiving the distinction from the four top award-giving bodies during that time.

Madrasta was also Sharon’s first Star Cinema movie after being a contract star of VIVA Films for the longest time.

But every success comes with an interesting back story.

In a recent Toni Talks interview, Madrasta director Olive Lamasan remembers an incident that made Sharon mad, causing her to cry on the set of the film!

Olive fondly recalls, “That was such an experience kasi galit na galit sa akin si Sharon!”

When host Toni Gonzaga asks her why, Olive answers with a smile, “Kasi ang metikulosa ko nga.”

Olive then goes on to tell the story.

“Natapos na iyong pelikula, ito na, ine-edit na, binuo na.

“Naku, pagbuo sabi ko, ‘Oh my God, bakit wala akong maramdaman sa pelikula? Oh my god.’

“So I had to call Sharon and I had to explain and I had to call Boyet [Christopher’s nickname] and I had to explain.”

This meant Olive called back Sharon and Christopher to reshoot some of their scenes.

The Star Cinema managing director continues, “Ito ang pinaka. I had to do five scenes in one day, and four of which are confrontation scenes! 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. of the following day. Tinapos namin, tinapos ni Sharon.

“Pagkatapos noon, umiyak siya.”

“I’M SO MAD AT YOU.”

As the two go way back to their days working together on The Sharon Cuneta Show, Sharon then openly told her director how she felt after that tedious shooting day.

Olive recalls in the interview, “’I’m so mad at you,’ sabi niya, ‘why did you do this to me, Inang?’

“Ay, Mommy O pa tawag sa akin noon, e. Because remember, I was also her executive producer in The Sharon Cuneta Show for six years so that’s how open [she was] and I took it.”

What did she do with the sobbing Megastar?

“I embraced her and sabi ko, ‘I’m so sorry, anak. Sorry, sorry talaga, but we have to do it. But I understand where you’re coming from.’

“’I understand your anger if you hate me blah blah.’

“Sabi niya, ‘I just had to tell you Mommy O. I love you so much, but why did you do this to me? Look at me, I’m so ugly!’

“But, my God, she was really beautiful in the film!”

The tears proved to be worth it because Madrasta was a box-office hit.

Not only that, in 1997, Sharon won Best Actress awards in all four award-giving bodies: FAMAS Awards, Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP), Gawad Urian Awards, and PMPC Star Awards for Movies.

Madrasta was also nominated in FAMAS, FAP, and Gawad Urian for Best Picture, but it only won in Gawad Urian.
